Pumpkin Pie Pickle

I love Thanksgiving! It’s the one holiday that’s “mine”, and I really get into it! The tables, the linens, the food, the specialty cocktail – one creative joy after another. I do turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy. Others do side-dishes and pumpkin pie. But this year, for one good reason or another, the declines kept rolling in. I expected twenty , we’re down to four. I’m in a pickle. A Pumpkin Pie Pickle.

At first, I started looking at last-minute flights to see our kids. Go somewhere, like “she just flew the coop!”

Life inevitably brings unexpected changes. People move, families break up, loved ones get sick or pass away. Homes are destroyed. Unexpected events can be disheartening. Unmet expectations bring disappointment. Change can be challenging.

I think I’ll make a pumpkin pie. Add a small turkey, some stuffing, potatoes, sides, a specialty cocktail. Set the table with all the best linens.

This Thanksgiving will be bittersweet. Pumpkin Pie, with a Pickle. And it will be perfect!

  1. Great thoughts. Miss going to Aunt Liz’s for Thanksgiving but so enjoyed going to Lorna’s last year. Can’t wait to go again this year.

  3. Isn’t it amazing how many expectations we have around the holidays? You have a great attitude, Sandy. We have to be open to change. Enjoy your intimate Thanksgiving! Hugs to you and Tom.

  4. Great article Sandy! And boy do I identify with your words. Change and disappointed; both can be challenging at times!! For me, I try my best to embrace the ebb and flow of life ….might take a while …. although eventually positivity sets in and I adjust my thinking. To my surprise, most of the time, things turn out better than expected. You’re obviously good at this as it resonates throughout your article. Pumpkin Pie Pickle – I love it!
Happy Thanksgiving Sister – gobble, gobble!!

  5. I have lived these thoughts so many years living in California. There were so many years in CA that I spent holidays aline. Now that I have lived in Georgia for two years my holidays have been filled with family that I haven’t spent holidays with for 35 years! I think about all those in California that have no where to go for Thanksgiving and wish I could have them here, enjoying the leaves changing colors, the fireplace lit and the over abundance of food to be enjoyed by all. Yes, I live in comfort now, as a retired woman, enjoying my 93 year old Mother and all my friends and family but am so sad for those that have lost everything!
